Кольцевая двунитевая молекула ДНК, входящая в состав митохондрий (размер мтДНК у животных обычно около 16 тыс. пар оснований, а в различных группах растений и микроорганизмов эта величина существенно больше и высокоизменчива); М.г. включает гены тРНК и рРНК, некоторых ферментов (субъединицы АТФазы, цитохромоксидазы и др.), в нем имеются некоторые отклонения от универсального триплетного кода (например, триплет УГА, являющийся стоп-кодоном в ядерном геноме, в М.г. животных кодирует триптофан); как правило, М.г. наследуется по материнскому типу; анализ структуры мтДНК с использованием рестриктаз endonucleases широко применяется в популяционно-генетических исследованиях.
